PRIMARY CARE RESPIRATORY TRAINING PROGRAMME 2026/7

Comprehensive Respiratory Training for Primary Care Health Care Professionals in Effective Asthma and COPD Management for Primary Care

CPD-accredited training covering adult and paediatric asthma and COPD, aligned to current UK guidance and delivered for real-world primary care practice, with a focus on Asthma and COPD Management for Primary Care.

Effective asthma and COPD management is a fundamental component of high-quality respiratory care in primary care settings.

This training programme will explore the key principles of comprehensive respiratory assessment and management, highlighting the vital role of primary care nurses in delivering personalised, evidence-based care.

Participants will learn how to conduct thorough patient assessments and develop individualised care plans tailored to patient needs.

The programme will also introduce the use of validated symptom control tools, including the Asthma Control Test (ACT) and the COPD Assessment Test (CAT), to support clinical decision-making, monitor disease control, and guide appropriate interventions.

Our Respiratory Courses

Asthma and COPD Management for Primary Care:
Key Strategies and Approaches

Respiratory care extends beyond prescribing inhalers.

Accurate diagnosis, structured review, inhaler technique assessment, and risk reduction are all essential to improving long-term control and preventing avoidable exacerbations.

Our courses are designed to strengthen clinical assessment and interpretation, including spirometry and FeNO testing, alongside treatment optimisation and personalised action planning.

Through a combination of structured live teaching and in-depth eLearning, we build the knowledge, clinical reasoning, and confidence required to deliver safer, guideline-aligned respiratory care in everyday primary care practice.

A Structured Evidence-Based Educational Framework:

An essential aspect of asthma and COPD management is recognising comorbidities that can complicate treatment and impact patient outcomes.

This programme will explore common conditions associated with both asthma and COPD, including allergic rhinitis, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), anxiety, depression, cardiovascular disease, obstructive sleep apnoea, type 2 diabetes and obesity.

It will examine how these comorbidities interact with respiratory symptoms, influence disease control, and affect management strategies.

By understanding and addressing these associated conditions, nurses can develop more effective, person-centred, and holistic care plans for patients living with asthma and COPD.

Each course is organised around a consistent educational pathway:

We will also explore the development and implementation of individualised self-management plans for people living with asthma and COPD.

Nurses will learn how to support patients in recognising symptoms, monitoring disease control, understanding their medications, and responding appropriately to deterioration or exacerbations.

The programme will highlight the importance of collaborative goal setting, personalised action plans, and patient education in promoting self-management, improving adherence, and enhancing long-term outcomes.

Normal Structure and Function:

Understanding normal physiology is the foundation of safe, effective clinical decision-making.

Disease Aetiology and Pathophysiology:

Exploring the mechanisms that drive disease progression and long-term risk.

Clinical Presentation and Recognition:

Recognising patterns, interpreting clinical features and investigations, and applying this to real-world primary care consultations.

Assessment and Risk Stratification:

Identifying complications, co-morbidities, and risk in primary care settings.

Management and Optimisation:

Evidence-based pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies aligned to current national guidance.
